Wilred claim Chandor Seamen Trophy

MARGAO, JAN 27 Wilred Leisure Sports Club, Curtorim inscribed their name on the glittering 37th Chandor Seamen rolling trophy beating Chicalim Youth Club 1-0 in the finals of inter-village football tournament organised by Chandor Club at Chandor ground, on Wednesday. There was no score at half time.

Wilred Leisure Sports Club, Curtorim inscribed their name on the glittering 37th Chandor Seamen rolling trophy beating Chicalim Youth Club 1-0 in the finals of inter-village football tournament organised by Chandor Club at Chandor ground, on Wednesday. There was no score at half time.
Both teams struggled in the opening session and there were a few attempts at either goal, as a result play was confined to the midfield.
Wilred Leisure slowly took over the reins with striker Agnelo Martins being a thorn in the rival defence. They breached the rival defence with orchestrated raids but Agnelo’s shot either went wide or shot straight into the safe hands of the rival keeper. At the other end, Chicalim tried hard to regain their composure.
Crossing over, Wilred Leisure made desperate bids and succeeded in netting the all-important goal 15 minutes after resumption when striker Agnelo Martins beat the Chicalim keeper with a snap shot after he received a through pass from Royceton Carneiro.
Stung by the setback, Chicalim went all out in search of the equaliser but Wilred Leisure’s rearguard was rock solid and frustrated the rival attacks.
Wilred Leisure were richer by Rs 30,000 while Chicalim had to be content with Rs 20,000.
Following individual prizes were awarded: Best player of the finals – Joel Mesquita (Chicalim YC). Best disciplined team – Sao Jose de Areal SC. Best goalkeeper of the finals – Bronson Sequeira (Wilred Leisure). Best midfielder – Jameson Noronha (Wilred Leisure). Best defender – Vicky (Wilred Leisure). Best goalkeeper of the tournament – Shamin Borkar (Chicalim YC). Best forward of  the finals – Agnelo Martins (Wilred Leisure).
Cuncolim MLA and Urban Development Minister, Joaquim Alemao was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Seema Dias, ZP member and sarpanch, Chandor, Derrick Pereira, Fr Damaciano Rebello, parish priest, Chandor church, Clefasio Dias, ex-chairman South Goa ZP, Joseph Antao, sarpanch, Guirdolim, Joe Vaz, president, Wilred Leisure SC, Anthony Rebello, Joseph Mascarenhas (ex-footballers), Dionisio Sardinha and Sudhin Verekar. In all 16 teams participated.
