Goa is well known as football crazy land and Canacona taluka which is not so famous for football is presently gripped with the World Cup fever.
Although there aren’t many football tournaments being organised in Canacona, except for an unaccounted but regular one-day mini-lightning affairs which are held in the interior, the Canacona people are these days all engrossed watching the world event while the youth have shown eagerness in imitating their favourites, these days on the paddy fields.
Most of Canacona youth have been rooting for Brazil and they wish they lift the Cup for the sixth time. The old timers, however, have been looking at Portugal, England and Italy as favourites.
Some boys playing in a paddy field at Khalwade, said theyw ere looking forward to watch Kaka and Robinho (Brazil), Messi and Tevez (Argentina), Cole, Lampard, Gerard (England), Henry (France), Muller, Klose (Germany) and Christiano Ronaldo (Portugal). “We love to watch them play and want to play like them.”
There are even some football fans here who have extended their vacations just to watch the matches uninterruptedly. Branco, is down on leave from the Gulf at this time of the year. He told Herald, “I prefer to be glued to the TV during the live telecast of the matches, while my other family members have been grumbling that they cannot watch their favourite programmes.”
“It’s a party every night,” said a group of youngsters who gather at one place to watch live matches.
Senior citizen, Seby (Shaka) has also been hit by the joy of World Cup.I am all for Brazil, but Maradona’s Argentina could give a surprise to the world.”
