PANJIM: The Goa State Legislative Assembly’s House Committee on bullfights has decided to seek comments and suggestions from stakeholders, including bullfight operators and NGOs, on the possibility of legalising bullfights in the State.
The House panel headed by BJP MLA Vishnu Wagh will submit its report to the government by February next year. Bullfights have been banned following a Supreme Court order.
The committee had its first meeting on Monday, wherein it decided to give equal opportunity to all stakeholders to put up their views on the possibility of legalising bullfights.
“We will be writing to the stakeholders to submit their suggestions and objections by December 10. All the aspects would be examined before drafting the report,” committee member and GVP MLA Caetano Silva told Herald.
MLAs Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, Benjamin Silva and Kiran Kandolkar are other members on the committee. The committee set up in August this year has to examine and research the existing laws, Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act including to check if bullfights can be permitted in the State.
The committee will hold meetings across the State seeking public views.
Recently Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar opined that the sport can be permitted without cruelty to animals.
