MARGAO: In an unprecedented action, the Cuncolim civic body has asked the Director of Municipal Administration to recover an amount of Rs 6.6 lakh from a former Chief Officer Shivaji Desai for negligence in the recovery of Sopo fees from a contractor for the year 2011-12.
CMC Chairperson Devendra Desai told Herald that the civic body has written to the DMA to initiate action on the Council resolution to recover the huge amount from the former Chief Officer.
The CMC action assumes significance and comes against the backdrop of the audit conducted by the Accountant General indicting the civic officials for gross negligence to execute an agreement before awarding the contract for collection of the Sopo fee and failure to recover revenue from the contractor Taiwan D’Souza Desai to the extent of Rs 6.6 lakh.
The audit had observed that the terms and conditions of the auction issued by the Chief Officer stipulated that every bidder shall deposit with the Council an amount of Rs 24,000, it was seen that the Demand Draft for Rs 24,000 submitted by the contractor towards EMD was not deposited into the bank by the Council.
