MARGAO: Will the flood victims of Sanvorcotto-Cuncolim get full compensation for the damages caused to their houses and other household items or the routine monetary relief as per the laid down guidelines?
This question came up before the Collector, N D Agrawal at a meeting held to review the disaster management in the district on Saturday when Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Devendra Dessai sought to know whether the flood victims will be fully compensated by the government.
Agrawal, sources said, made it plain clear to the CMC Chairperson that he is empowered to give the compensation as per the existing rules. He, however, left it to the government to take a call on the enhanced compensation to the victims.
“While giving compensation, I am guided by the procedure laid down by law. But, I can forward the request of the victims for full compensation”, Agrawal told the CMC chairperson.
Desai is believed to have told the Collector that since the GSIDC is responsible for causing the floods, the agency should be told to pay full compensation to the victims.
Meanwhile, the authorities have started work on removing the pipes from the culvert erected in Sanvorcotto rivulet, which locals say was the prime factor responsible for flooding over 60 houses and causing a loss of around Rs 31 lakh.
