… also want housing societies to have compositing units

The proposal of the Santa Cruz panchayat to make construction of composting units compulsory for housing societies received a further boost as the gram sabha gave its approval and passed a resolution stating that all buildings/housing societies should construct composting units in its own backyard for treating wet and bio-degradable waste.
The resolution was passed when one of the villagers sought explanation from Sarpanch Rosy Fernandes over the issue.
Speaking to Herald, Sarpanch Fernandes said now the issue will be discussed at the panchayat meeting and after getting approval, it would be made mandatory for all buildings/housing societies to treat wet and bio-degradable waste on its own.
She also informed that during the course of time, the panchayat would make it mandatory for individual dwellings, as well, to treat bio-degradable waste.
However, instead of having separate composting units for each dwelling, the panchayat has come up with an idea of building a common composting pit so that the cost is shared, she informed.
