AGENCIES, KOLKATA: Dempo Sports Club got the better of Gokulam Kerala FC 2-1 as the topped the group in the U-15 Hero Junior League organised by AIFF, at Royal Park stadium, Barrackpore-Kolkata, on Saturday.
The match started on a high tempo as the Golden Eagles just a need a draw but Gokulam Kerala FC were in a must win situation. Dempo played with their style of play by keeping ball.
A good one to two by Sherwin Abranches and Necio Fernandes opened up the opponents’ defence and hit the shot from 25 yards to score a brilliant goal by giving the Golden Eagles the lead in the 10th minute.
In the 18th minute, a good counter attack by Dempo who caught them on the break saw Velanco Rodrigues make good run to put pin point pass to Vieri Colaco to make it 2-0 for the Golden Eagles.
Gokulam Kerala FC didn’t lose hope as they kept good pressure on.
Two good reflex save by GK Glen Fernandes kept the score intact. Gokulam Kerala FC pressure game paid off as they scored the opening goal off the corner kick in the 38th minute after poor marking from the Dempo SC defence in the box.
In the second half, Gokulam Kerala FC started the same tempo by putting long balls into the Dempo defence territory but the Dempo defenders adjusted the situation very well.
Fresh Legs on the field made the difference and as Dempo missed two sitters through captain Necio in a one-on-one situation with the keeper as he shot wide while Vieri Colaco instead tapping the ball blasted the ball over the cross.
As per the standings, Dempo SC remained unbeaten in group stage and qualified for the final phase which begins on May 21.
