PANJIM: The Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) has sought that the government help the rescued members of the Pratibha Bheema vessel that was towed into Mormugao Port by Mormugao Port Trust tugs, bringing relief to the starving crewmen.
Speaking on the occasion of the Seafarers’ Day celebrated recently Michael Beny da Costa hit out at the National Seafarers’ Association of India as well as the Mumbai Seamen’s Union for neglecting their own.
“The government should take care of the crew on board Pratima Bhima which is docked in Mormugao Port Trust Vasco by providing food and water to them. The trade union, Mumbai and the NSUI are not taking care of their own members who are on board this ship without drinking water, food and electricity,” da Costa said.
It may be recalled that the ship Bheema, which was afloat off Goa coast was ordered to be towed in before the monsoon lest it becomes another River Princess.
The GSAI also thanked the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar for sorting out the issue of the seafarers’ pension.
Four Ex-Seamen and now sarpanchas of different panchayats were felicitated by Alfonso Pereira, Principal of Agnel Institute of Food, Craft & Culinary Science who was a special invitee at the function. They included — Sanzil D’Costa Sarpanch V P FatorpaQuital, Antonio Sequeira Sarpanch V P Chinchinim, Olasrico Rodrigues Sarpanch V P Dramapur Sirlim and Duarte Pires Sarpanch V P Telaulim.
