MARGAO: The Dramapur village gram sabha was the latest to pass a resolution stating that properties acquired by the government under the Goa Escheats, Forfeiture and Bona Vacantia Bill, 2024, should be vested with local bodies for the execution of public development projects.

Last week, the Navelim gram sabha passed a similar resolution.
At the Dramapur gram sabha meeting, it was further resolved that such public development projects should be considered with the consent of the gram sabha and after the holding period ends.
Elaborating further, local resident Dominic Noronha opined that such bills need public consultation, given that they have the potential to affect the demography if the lands are misused beyond the area’s capacity.
The local residents also demanded that the publication of properties acquired under the provisions of the Bill should be done through newspapers as well as local bodies.
They further demanded that the holding period for such properties should be 15 years, which is in line with the requirements for a residence certificate.
