MARGAO: Social media and particularly WhatsApp has been keeping police on the toes for the last few days as totally false news is being circulated on the platform causing panic amongst the people and creating nuisance and bad blood.
A post has been circulating for the last four days reportedly sent by a prominent lady from Raia cautioning people of Raia, Curtorim, Loutolim, Ambora and Borim to be very alert as a group of people wearing masks are attacking motorists and robbing them.
The post stated that the gang carries acid to melt locks of vehicles and also spray some acidic substance on people who, due to the burning sensation, cannot defend themselves and reported that the attacks take place between 2.30 am and 4 am.
The post also alleged that police are involved in the matter and are helping the culprits. However, Police Inspector Gurudas Kadam who has jurisdiction over the places mentioned in the post refuted that any such incidents have occurred.
He pointed out that the police have not received even one complaint about such an incident and said it was mischief played by someone just to create panic amongst the people.
Meanwhile, on Saturday pictures of Colva Church with its fallen balustrades were circulating on the social media implying that it was deliberate and mischievous attack to create communal tension.
However, it was learnt that the balustrades collapsed due to heavy cyclonic winds that blew across Goa on Thursday night.
