Another I-T official lands in CBI net on bribery charges

PANJIM: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Anti-Corruption Branch arrested the second assistant account officer of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Panjim, Pankaj Kumar on bribery charges.

It may be recalled that his partner in crime Assistant account officer Atul Wani was arrested on Friday for allegedly accepting a bribe to process a contractor’s overdue payments.

Kamlakant Chaturvedi, proprietor of Manpower Service at Socorro, had filed a complaint with the CBI on Wednesday, alleging that Kumar and his associates demanded a bribe of Rs 2 lakh to clear seven months of unpaid invoices for services provided to the Income Tax Department.

Chaturvedi had said that payments were unjustifiably withheld for months, prompting him to approach the authorities. CBI had laid trap with Chaturvedi’s help and nabbed the two officers at Patto, Panjim on Thursday.

A case has been registered against the two accounts officers of Income Tax department under Section 7 of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. DySP (CBI, ACB) Arjun Kumar Maurya is conducting investigations.
