Goa University too in line of fire

Sports Minister Babu Azgaonkar today said that the grants to Goa University would be stopped if it does not implement the State Sports Policy immediately.
Replying to the cut motions in the House, Azgaonkar said that he would ask the Chief Minister Digamabar Kamat and the Education Minister Babush Monserrate to take action against the University.
Earlier, the legislators had brought to the notice of the minister that the university had failed to implement the cabinet decision on implementing the sports policy.
“Goa University totally depends on the grants and funding from the State and it is wrong on their part not to accept the government decision,” he said.
Further, he said, “whatever is passed in Assembly has to be followed by the university so that no injustice is done to the students, who take up sports.
“I will ask the chief minister and the education minister to direct the university to implement the policy immediately failing which their grants should be stopped,” he stated.
National Games: Azgaonkar said the government is in process of acquiring 9,84,000 lakh sq mt in Pernem taluka for building the Sports city for the 2011 National Games.
The minister said that the sports city will generate employment for the youth of Pernem and surrounding areas.
“With the two new projects coming up – Mopa airport and the Sports City, Pernem would be one of the most sought after place in the State,” he stated adding “recently I had been to South Africa for the Football World Cup and have seen the infrastructure there. We will try and build the infrastructure for national games on those lines”.
