MARGAO: Following their recent protest at the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), the ST, SC and OBC community vendors have demanded that MMC clear all migrants from all streets of Margao, Aquem, Ravindra Bhavan Road and near KTC Bus stand who presently are selling fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc. The vendors also pointed out that the Mormugao and Mapusa municipal councils had already taken action against such vendors and questioned as to why MMC had not done the same.
Social activist Croydon Medeira, who is representing the vendors, met MMC chairperson and MMC Chief Officer and apprised them of the vendors’ grievances and recent protests where an ultimatum had been given to the civic body. He also informed the chairperson that a market inspector is allegedly not performing his duties properly and that this MMC employee had stated that MLAs, councillors and ministers are instructing him to release whatever is confiscated.

While the vendors received assurances from the chairperson that action would be taken, the CO informed them that he will put up the matter for the next council meeting and that this issue would be treated with utmost importance.
“They (migrant vendors) are causing traffic congestion, which creates problems for the public and police as well. They cause a mess by leaving behind waste and unsold, spoiled and rotten items which the municipality in turn has to clean. MMC should realise this and remove them from these places even before they set shop by the roadside. Such acts are never done by Goan vendors,” said Medeira.
