CALANGUTE: Six motorcycle taxis were set ablaze at Calangute, even as residents from Gaura Vaddo, Calangute, led by their Panch Joseph Sequeira have accused the police of failing to take appropriate action in the arson.
A Nepali national was arrested in this connection and he was later released on bail.
According to reports, six motorcycle taxis, belonging to Agnelo Sequeira, which were parked outside his compound, were burnt in the wee hours of Sunday. The incident was captured on CCTV camera and a neigbhour provided footage to the Calangute Police, who arrested the Nepali national.
The owner of the motorcycle taxis has claimed a loss of over Rs 1.5 lakh. In a press note, Calangute Panch Joseph Sequeira has accused the Calangute Police of failing to take appropriate action and punish the guilty in the crime, where the property of a local was totally gutted in the fire.
“Such persons, involved in the tourism industry, have been involved in various crimes and have been let off with minor punishments and if such a trend continues, it will be dangerous to the society at large,” stated Sequeira.
“The act by the accused was of serious nature with intent to damage property and building of the local youth and he deserved severe punishment. I call upon the chief minister, who is also the home minister, to direct the Calangute Police to arrest the culprit and punish him severely,” added Sequeira.
When contacted, Calangute PI Nolasco Raposo said the police have taken appropriate action in the matter.
