ANJUNA: The death of a young call centre employee from Kerala who was holidaying in Anjuna has fuelled speculation that he may have died of a drug overdose.
Though the police have denied these speculations, the group of youngsters to which the youth belonged allegedly frequented a couple of notorious hot spots on Anjuna beach and partied hard during their stay in the State.
According to Anjuna police, the young man belonged to a group of 10 to 12 tourists from Kerala in the age group of 25-30, who came to Goa on December 8 and were holidaying at Anjuna beach.
Police say that according to the statements of his companions, the youth was perfectly healthy and they were having a good time, but were just sticking to booze and had not tried anything else. Sources say that he is supposed to have fallen sick on December 9, and was taken to St Anthony’s hospital, Anjuna.
“We were informed by the Goa Medical College and Hospital that one person had died on Wednesday morning. He was referred there from St Anthony’s Hospital,” Anjuna PI Paresh Naik told Herald, adding, “They (his companions) themselves took him to the GMC.”
According, to police, his companions in their statements denied having anything harder than liquor.
“I insisted that an autopsy was conducted and parents have taken possession of the body. However, the viscera has been preserved and will be sent for testing to Bengalaru,” Naik said.
However, given the reputation of the area, though nobody would admit to him having taken some illegal substance, locals allege that drugs are freely available in and around many of the beachside shacks.
