PANJIM: Several supporters and workers of Porvorim independent MLA Rohan Khaunte on Tuesday joined Congress Party at the Congress House, Panjim.
Among the prominent people, who joined the Congress was former ZP member Gupesh Naik and many panchayat members of Penha de Franca, Salvador do Mundo and Socorro village panchayats.
They were admitted into the Congress by the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Girish Chodankar in the presence of Leader of the Opposition Digambar Kamat, GPCC working president Aleixo Sequeira and other office-bearers.
Welcoming Khaunte’s supporters to the party fold, Chodankar said that with their joining has strengthened Congress party’s position in Porvorim Constituency.
Kamat alleged that the BJP government had no concern for the welfare of the people. He questioned the motive of organising the National Women’s Parliament and diverting State-owned KTC buses to the event thereby inconveniencing the daily commuters.
While expressing gratitude on behalf of all for the welcome meted out to them in the party, Gupesh Naik said that they decided to join the Congress because it is the only party which works for the people and fight against the BJP.
Later, MLA Rohan Khaunte said that he is in talks with the Congress party and that he will inform about his decision regarding joining the Congress at the end of his current term. He however strongly advocated the need of all like-minded parties coming together on one platform to defeat the BJP.
