MARGAO: Goa government’s scheme to foot a portion of travel expenses of pilgrims from Goa attending the canonisation of Blessed Joseph Vaz in Sri Lanka in January has not found favour with the Rector of Blessed Joseph Vaz Shrine, Fr Eremito Rebello.
Fr Rebello, who has been responsible for sending a portion of the documentation from Goa to the Vatican for the sainthood of Blessed Joseph Vaz, has raised serious reservations over the plan when the government is in huge debt. “Whether it is the question of sponsoring of ministers, MLAs or the people of Goa, the government is wasting public money. What the government should seriously do is cut expenditure on ministers, MLAs and the Chief Minister so as to reduce the debt amounting to Rs 12,600 crore”, he asserted.
Fr Rebello, who is the vice postulator for the cause of Sainthood of Blessed Joseph Vaz, questioned the government over schemes such as Ladli Laxmi and scheme for the women when the government is in so much debt.
“As an honest and sincere citizen, I feel that the government decision to bear a portion of the travel expenses of Goans visiting
Sri Lanka is unwarranted”,
he said.
