Agriculture minister announces plan for agriculture hub at Fatorda

MARGAO: Agriculture Minister Vijai Sardessai on Saturday announced plans to establish an agriculture hub on 50,000 sq mts of land that was earlier acquired for the truck terminus.
He said that only the farmers who had lost their land would be benefit through the hub.
He pointed out that farmers had objected to the truck terminus and protested against losing the land they used to cultivate rice and said those who had lost their fields would benefit from the agriculture hub that would now be set up.
“Agriculture will take place 24 hours and 12 months in this area with all modern facilities provided to them including green houses, irrigation facilities, etc,” he said adding that only organic farming will be undertaken here.
He said the farmers would be provided marking facilities too at the hub and added that if necessary the government would also set up a cold chain to keep the farm produce fresh for a longer period of time.
On the remaining land, he said he has proposed to set up an IT hub with a condition that residents of Fatorda get employed there. “Fatorda has given up the land so they should get some benefit especially in the jobs that are generated,” he said admitting that these plans are in nascent stage.
