Apparently feeling the heat with many of his Catholic MLAs speaking or writing to him about respecting the sentiments of Catholics as well as the statement of the Archbishops calling for the withdrawal of the CAA, Goa Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant has decided to meet the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman Rev Filipe Neri Ferrrao. Though the CM Sawant hasn’t revealed the agenda of the meeting, it can be clearly assumed that this is a result f the heat generated after the statement issued on behalf of the Archbishop calling for the withdrawal of the CAA and “desist” from implementing the NPR and NRC.

With the exception of Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho, who said that the it is wrong for any religious body to issue a statement that creates communal divide, two minority community BJP MLAs, Water Resources Minister Filipe Nery Rodrigues has “conveyed the sentiments” of the Catholic community to the Chief Minister and Aldona MLA Glen Ticolo has called for greater respect to the Archbishop
The Congress in Goa, as reported has stated, “Archbishop has the right to express his opinion. CAA is a part of an amendment to the Indian Constitution. Archbishop has conveyed the message at a time when the nation wants its withdrawal,” Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat said.
The Archbishop had urged the government to revoke the Act, which has led to widespread protest in the country, and to also desist from implementing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).
Asked for the party reaction to the CAA, Kamat maintained that their ‘stand is clear’. “We have expressed from time to time, it is an amendment to the Constitution. Ours (Indian Constitution) is the best in the world, we are opposed to CAA. We state that divisive things cannot work in this country,” he said.
