FC Goa edge past Dempo SC; Salgaocar FC humble Vasco SC

PANJIM/MARGAO: Strikes from Nestor Dias and Delton Colaco helped FC Goa record a nervy 2-1 win over Dempo SC in GFA Goa Professional League (Super League) at the Salvador do Mundo Panchayat ground.

An injury time goal by Gaurav Vaigankar made for a jittery end to the game for the Gaurs, but Deggie Cardozo’s boys held on to all three points.

The boys in Orange had to wait till the 31st minute to score the opener. A foul on Delton Colaco inside Dempo’s box resulted in a penalty which was coolly converted by captain Nestor Dias. This was his first goal of the ongoing season.

It took just two minutes since the start of the second half for FC Goa to double their lead – this time in spectacular fashion. Delton found himself with loads of space just outside Dempo’s box and unleashed a shot which flew past their goalkeeper and into the far corner of the net to score his second of the season.

The match then turned into a heated affair with both teams fighting for possession. Dempo often had the upper hand since then but the Gaurs’ defenders managed to keep them at bay with a solid display.

In the 77th minute, FC Goa were reduced to ten men following the sending off of Alister Fernandes. Dempo pulled a goal back in added time.

At Duler ground, Salgaocar FC scored four past Vasco SC.

Vasco SC were missing the services of their regular players – Luis Barretto, Cavin Lobo, Francisco Fernandes and Beevan D’Mello, as it was learnt that all four senior players didn’t turn up for the match as a protest against poor refereeing in the league.

Ribhav Sardessai opened the scoring for Salgaocar in the 6th minute. In the 42nd minute Samuel Gregorio Costa doubled the account for Salgaocar. In the second half, Mark Carvalho netted a brace for Salgaocar FC in the 46th and 58th minutes respectively.
