PORVORIM: Deputy Speaker and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, on Friday, created a flutter in the House when he said that one of the reasons for BJP’s debacle in the Assembly elections was the controversial amendment to the Tenancy Act.
“The amendment to the Tenancy Act during the Parrikar-Parsekar government was a mistake. The amendment to the Goa Tenancy Act of 1964 was brought by our BJP government in the year 2014-15 where all the cases were transferred from the mamlatdars to the civil court. However, due to this, the tenants became unhappy and I think this is one reason for the BJP to come down. Now the House has unanimously passed the Bill to return the tenancy cases back to the mamlatdars,” Lobo said during the discussion on demands.
Lobo also pointed out that people were unhappy due to the declassification of coconut palm as tree. “Better late than never and I think it is a good move by the government now,” he said, referring to the State Tree status to be bestowed on the coconut palm.
However, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar remained adamant and said, “I don’t think this was the reason.”
Lobo also questioned why there is a delay in issuing partition and conversion sanads, demanding an answer from the minister. On Information Technology (IT), Lobo stated that Goa is backward in IT and a result of it Goan talent goes outside the State.
“We should specify how we are going to bring them back and when will they get opportunities here in Goa,” Lobo added.
Lobo also demanded that a new office be constructed for the North Goa Collectorate.
