PANJIM: Thirteen-year-old Joao Estrocio swam brilliantly to win both the 2km full Swimathon and 250m sprint swim at Swimathon 2013 at Grand Hyatt Goa, Bambolim Beach, Sunday.
In the 2km race, he finished over seven minutes before second-placed Raghavendra Kaskar of Sawantwadi. Mihir Deshpande bagged the third place.
Xavier D’Souza came second in the 250m race, while Ashwin Mascarenhas came third.
In the 1km half swimathon, Xavier D’Souza stood first while Ashwin Mascarenhas was second and Taran Mukherjee finished third. Suman Patil was the fastest female swimmer in the 1km and 250m races, while Aadini Prabhu was the best girl in the 2km full swimathon.
Cash prizes totaling Rs 20,000 were provided by the NRB Group, while special prizes in various categories were given by Grand Hyatt Goa and CRG.
Nitin Bandekar of the NRB Group, Grand Hyatt Goa Recreation Manager Ram Chatterjee and CRG Director Nishtha Desai gave away the prizes.
In all, 106 participants ranging from seven-year-olds to 61-years-olds took part. The event raised funds for Children’s Rights in Goa (CRG).
Sponsors were Grand Hyatt Goa, the NRB Group, Wallace Pharmaceuticals, DSYA, Corporation Bank, IDBI Bank, Federal Bank, The Swim Shop (Speedo), Magsons Superstores, Zantye’s Cashewnuts and the Rotary Club of Panjim Riviera. The event was managed by NRB Events, part of the NRB Group led by Narayan Bandekar.
