VASCO: Raising serious concerns over the continuance of bird hits and dog menace at Dabolim Airport, Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida on Friday claimed that about that about 30 cases of bird hits and dog menace have been reported at the airport in last one month and the situation appears to be alarming.
He was speaking to reporters after concluding the joint meeting called to discuss issues between Indian Navy and Mormugao Municipal council and to discuss about the ongoing road widening work from GSL to Church Square in Vasco. Mormugao Deputy Collector Mahadev Arundekar, Captain Vikram Menon from INS Hansa along with other Navy officials, Officials from MPDA, MMC, Secretaries of Chicalim, Bogmalo, Sancoale Village Panchayat, PWD NH officials and others attended the meeting.
We only have to thank God as till date nothing has happened, he said.
“To control dog menace, the role of People for Animal (PFA) is important. The PFA unit, located barely few hundred meters from Dabolim airport, is providing service in other constituencies and even going up to Agassaim. They have to first control the dog menace in Vasco and airport should a priority,” he pointed out.
He said necessary directions were given to officials on Friday and another meeting has been fixed on Monday, wherein officials from PFA, Airport Authority of Indian (AAI) and Navy will deliberate on the issue of bird hits and dog menace, he added.
“Also with regards to other issue of bird hits at Dabolim Airport, what we have learnt is that the AAI is giving their garbage to a contractor and no one is aware as to where the contractor disposes AAI garbage. It was also informed during the meeting that the AAI contractor has been segregating the garbage the garbage near INS Hansa gate. This in turn increases dog menace at Airport as dogs visit such segregation sites to eat waste food. Therefore I want to request AAI to give its garbage to MMC and the money paid to the contractor can be paid to MMC for lifting AAI garbage, like the way navy doing all these years,” the Vasco MLA added.
During the meeting Navy officials also brought to the notice that garbage menace on the highway stretch road from INS Hansa main gate till Varunapuri (NH17-B road) still continues, therefore it was decided to hold a mass cleanliness drive along with Navy, Government departments and MMC on November 18.
