MARGAO: Margao Municipal Council will start reducing the traffic island at Old Market junction next week in collaboration with the Public Works Department. The traffic circle that has a diameter of 19 meters will be reduced to 6 meter diameter circle.
MMC Chief Office Siddhivinayak Naik along with Municipal Engineer Manoj Arsekar, PWD AE National Highways Palandikar, local councilor Glenn Andrade along with other officials inspected the circle and also took measurements.
The PWD has agreed to asphalt the road once the circle is cut down.
“We are just implementing the two-year-old resolution of the council and also the resolution taken at the last meeting,” said Siddhivinayak Naik while pointing out that the world wide norm is not to have traffic island where traffic signals are installed.“Once the diameter is reduced we shall remove all the overhead cables as they make the area look shabby,” he said adding that if they are private cables of cable TV operators, they would just cut them if the party fails to take them underground.
MMC is beginning with the traffic island at Old Market junction and next will be the Bolshe Circle at Borda where again traffic lights are installed. The other traffic circles that will be reduced are the ones at Ravindra Bhavan, Arlem and Rawanfond. The PWD has already issued the contract to build the traffic circle at Power House junction and hence that will be done as per the required norms.
