CALANGUTE: The Calangute police on Wednesday arrested 28-year-old Suman Sonar, another of the staff at Marina beach shack in connection with the murder of Bhola Ravi Teja, a tourist from Andhra Pradesh, on New Year’s Eve.

The police have so far arrested five persons and more arrests are not ruled out.

Calangute police have registered a case of murder and already arrested the shack owner Agnelo Silveira, 64, his son Schubert Silveira, 23, and two shack workers, Anil Bista, 24, and Kamal Sunar, 23, both natives of Nepal. They have been remanded in nine days police custody.
The police have recovered the CCTV footage along with other corroborative evidence including the weapon ‘danda’ used during the assault.
The Calangute police stated that the alleged accused are repeat offenders and in 2021 the shack owner Silveira and his two sons were booked under Section 326 of IPC for having grievously injured tourists, who had visited the shack. Three victims had suffered injuries including fractures on their hands when they had attempted to defend themselves. The matter is currently under trial before the Court.
Meanwhile, it is learnt that the police had several meetings with the beach shack operators and had directed them not to take law into their own hands by assaulting the tourists.
“We had advised them to inform police about any untoward or altercations so that we will sort out the issue across the table. It’s like pouring water on a duck’s back and some operators are in no mood to listen. They often look at domestic tourists with disdain and slander them as ghantis. Such incidents only mar the image of the State and bring disrepute to Goa,” a police officer said.
On several occasions, the domestic tourists are also foul-mouthed but this does not give the shack operators the right to assault them. Two wrongs don’t make a right and it is time that all shack operators be imparted training on how to handle the guests,” the officer added.
