MARGAO: Various government agencies got their act together after the call by Fisheries Minister Vinod Palienkar for a defined and concrete action to monitor the quality of fish sold in Goan markets.
Consequently, a team comprising the Goa State Pollution Control Board, Food and Drugs Administration and Margao Municipal Council conducted a joint inspection of the wholesale fish market at Margao on Saturday.
The officials from the three bodies inspected the quality of ice used to preserve fish and the conditions fish was sold in the wholesale market.
The President of the Wholesale Fish Traders Association Shaikh Ibrahim welcomed the government initiative. Fishermen and wholesalers from Margao market said they use fresh ice from the factory and no pesticides were used.
Cleanliness and hygiene aspect was also prominent during the inspection.
