MAPUSA: Guirim and surrounding areas may witness major flooding and probably get submerged under water this year as there is rampant mud filling and construction activity going on in the low-lying fields here.
The village is often marooned during the rains for the last two decades with water reaching the doorsteps while fields and the roads get submerged during the rainy season.
Villagers say that the chocked nullahs here have never been desilted while expansion of the national highway and blocking of all water outlets by the contractors without application of mind was the main cause of flooding during the rains.
This year however, the situation will go from bad to worse, say villagers as there is rampant mud filling in low lying fields to carry out construction activity while the authorities concerned prefer to see no evil.
Residents allege that the dumping of mud and constructions going on in the fields has been raised on several occasions at the gram sabha but they only got elusive answers to their questions from the panchayat.
“Water logging during the monsoon is a major issue that we face every year however the panchayat and other authorities have done absolutely nothing to sort it out. The road as well as the portion of the panchayat building gets submerged during the rains almost every year. Now the fields have been filled with mud and constructions have come up which will only result in a bigger disaster this year,” said a local.
