PANJIM: Ponda Footballers were lucky to hold Portais Sporting Club 1-1 in the GFA under 14 Second Division league match played at Carambolim ground, Carambolim.
The match was dominated by Portais and went 1-0 up in the very 10th minute off a move initiated by Rankit Choudhary. Sohel K Bepari scored a splendid field goal with a powerful first touch connection which gave no chance to the Ponda keeper.
Thereafter Portais came near scoring through a free kick just outside the penalty area but Rankit try just missed the target.
Ponda were lucky to equalise off a counter attack when Ponda’s Chaitan Koparpant was tackled by Portias’ Lariston Fernandes in the penalty area. A penalty was offered for Ponda which was neatly converter by Chaitan to make it 1-1.
At half time the score was 1-1.
In the second half, Portais came with renewed vigour and dished out excellent soccer but were unsuccessful.
With today’s match Ponda are out of qualifying race as they stand on 7 points from 5 matches while on the other hand Portais Sporting are on 7 Points with two matches still to be played and a victory in both their remaining matches will see them through to qualify for the play off.
