MAPUSA: Salgaocar Football Club will be chasing their first win after three consecutive defeats as they take on Kolkata giants East Bengal in round 14 of Airtel I-League, at Duler Stadium, here, on Wednesday.

Salgaocar FC coach, Derrick Pereira has urged his team to learn from the mistakes in the defence and start firing again. The Green Brigade, not too long ago, were at the top of the standings but three successive defeats have pushed them down to the fourth posistion with 18 points. After a flying start, Salgaocar FC have not lived up to the expectations and it will take only a win to get their confidence back.

Salgaocar FC started with a flourish, sweeping the opponents before them and racing to the lead. But for the last five matches now that the former champions are without a win having drawn twice. It is certainly a matter of concern for the Green and Whites before they lose the title race. In the last two matches they got punished for their defensive lapses and lack of firepower upfront with only Scottish Darryl Duffy available after French Claude Gnakpa had been released.

East Bengal, now trained by Armando Colaco, are considered among the strongest teams in the competition, at least on paper.

Armando, since taking over East Bengal, has had mixed luck in his three matches in-charge. Winning the derby against Mohun Bagan 1-0, drawing the other with United SC 1-1 and losing the third to Rangdajeid United FC 2-1. Colaco’s side, though, still remains in the reckoning and a win over Salgaocar will be a major booster.

East Bengal are placed eighth with 14 points from nine matches and a win against Salgaocar will take them to the top half. They still have three matches in hand.
