MARGAO: Curtorkars will remember its first MLA and freedom fighter, Enio Pimenta, by naming a village road after him on December 26.
The function is being organised by the village panchayat of Curtorim and the Enio Pimenta Memorial Trust.
Addressing the media, Curtorim MLA Reginaldo Lourenco said that the first Curtorim MLA Enio Pimenta was a visionary and worked towards uplifting poor and downtrodden. “It was Pimenta who had given a thrust to agriculture in the village and the practice is being followed till date”, he said, adding that it is the responsibility of the villagers to carry forward his mission and ensure that his vision becomes a reality. “The decision to name the road after Pimenta was taken jointly, by the gram sabha and panchayat to recognise the contribution of Curtorim’s first MLA”, he said.
Curtorim deputy Sarpanch J Santano Rodrigues said that Curtorim’s first MLA has been a source of inspiration to the village youth. “Pimenta was my teacher and was responsible for sowing the seeds of nationalism in the youth. The primary health centre was started during his tenure. He was a great visionary and fought against injustice, besides playing a major role during the opinion poll”, he said.
Late Enio Pimenta’s son Jawaharlal said his father had played an active role in Goa’s liberation movement and participated in the satyagraha on June 21, 1946, at Lohia Maidan along with Purushottam Kakodkar. He was the founder member of Curtorim Educational & Welfare Foundation founded in 1962.
