MARGAO: Aam Aadmi Party, on behalf of the tribal ladies selling vegetables and fruits at Margao, on Monday, demanded that the Margao Municipal Council immediately provide “street vendors zones” as mandated by the Parliament.
Leading the women, Rajeshree Nagarsekar of AAP said that if MMC had no right to deprive the tribals from carrying on their business as the MMC has failed to provide a street vendors zone for them and hence demanded that they be permitted to carry on their sale.
“The poor ladies are only trying to add a little to the family income by taking great hardships in getting the produce from their villages to the town and selling on the roadside without creating any problems for the traffic,” said Rajeshree.
Besides, the memorandum noted that the tribal women are providing organically grown fruits and vegetables to the people of Margao who otherwise have to purchase these produce infested with chemicals to increase their shelf life.
A copy of the memorandum addressed to the Chief Officer and Chairperson of MMC was also handed over to the Deputy Director of Tribals’ Welfare Department at the old Collectorate building.
