On Monday, a fiery discussion unfolded in the Goa Legislative Assembly between opposition MLAs and the Public Works Department (PWD) minister. The focus of the debate was on finding a solution to the severe water crisis and addressing the grievances of Goans, particularly in South Goa, who received exorbitant water bills.
During the session, Quepem MLA Altone DCosta raised several critical issues affecting his constituency. He highlighted that numerous areas in Quepem were facing acute water shortages, with residents lacking access to clean drinking water. He also brought to the House’s attention the negligence in maintaining water tanks, which were left unclean, and alleged that pump operators were prioritizing political meetings over their duties. Furthermore, DCosta pointed out a shortage of staff, contributing to the inefficiencies in water distribution.

In addition to the water crisis, DCosta stressed the grievances of the people in South Goa, who had received disproportionately high water bills despite their minimal water consumption. Numerous constituents in his region and other parts of South Goa had expressed frustration over these unexpected and burdensome bills.
Responding to the concerns raised during the heated discussion, the Goa PWD minister assured the House that the government, in collaboration with his department, is actively working on finding a permanent solution to the prevailing water crisis. Additionally, he acknowledged the issue of inflated water bills and committed to resolving the matter for those who had received such high bills. The minister assured the assembly that efforts were underway to rectify the billing discrepancies and address the underlying problems causing these issues.
