MARGAO: Gram sabha members of Aquem-Baixo have bitterly protested over the convening of the gram sabha on Carnival Sunday on February 10.
Members led by Maria Blanche Da Costa and others petitioned the Salcete Block Development Officer, Uday Prabhudesai, with a plea to postpone the Aquem Baixo gram sabha scheduled on February 10.
In the petition, the members pointed out that Aquem-Baixo village mostly comprises of maximum Christians and they see this as a deliberate ploy on the part of the panchayat body to ensure that maximum people do not attend the gram sabha. “We have noted that even the last gram sabha was purposely kept on the day of Maddi, i.e. the first day of the preparation of the village feast on November 11,” they recalled. The petition stated that since the government itself declares to the citizens to eat, drink and make merry for four-days, this can create a law and order problem as most people could come drunk for the gram sabha and disturb the same.
