PANJIM: Congress on Wednesday lambasted the Sports Department for their failure to provide financial assistance to the Coelho siblings who had represented India during therecently held Asian Games in windsurfing.
Dayne and Katya Coelho had represented the country in the Asian Games, however, due to lack of support from the State Sports Department, they failed to win a medal.
Congress’ spokesman Amarnath Panjikar said that the Sports Department completely disregarded the plea by the Coelho siblings and their father-cum-coach Donald Coelho for financial help to buy new windsurfing boards. “Somewhere the confidence level of these players from Goa who represented India at an international event went down. They had to practice with old surfing boards and also participated in the Games with them,” he said.
Panjikar also lambasted the Sports Department for failing to receive the players at the airport upon their arrival in the State.
