CHORAO: Deputy Speaker Anant Shet assured to temporarily repair the bund at Chorao Island, which was damaged by anchoring of ferry boats.
Shet inspected the damaged bund following a report in Herald and assured that temporary repair work will be carried out on priority basis to avoid further damage. “Permanent cement-concrete retaining wall will be constructed of about 60 metres length to strengthen the Varona-Patramona khazan land at Chorao,” assured Shet.
It may be recalled that the khazan bund at Chorao Island was damaged due to anchoring of ferry boats, especially at night, as no alternative arrangement has been made by the River Navigation Department (RND) to anchor ferry boats.
About 200 farmers who cultivate the land feared that the bund may be washed away and saline water would enter their fields.
However, acting swiftly on the report that appeared in Herald on July 2, Shet along with Sarpanch Divya Usapkar, executive engineer Badani and assistant engineer Kumar, technical engineer Pokle inspected the site and assured that tender will be issued to construct the retaining wall in September.
“Temporary rubble and filling of soil will be carried out on priority basis,” assured Shet.
Others present were Khazan Chairman Ganesh Govenkar, Secretary Arjun Govenkar, ex-chairman Ramrai Khandeparkar, ex-secretrary Mukund Khandeparkar, Gopi Mandrekar, ex-sarpanch Premanand Mahambre, Shankar Chodankar and other tenants.
