PONDA: The State Election Commission has approached the High Court requesting permission to hold Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) election on May 12 in view of the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Ponda, which will be celebrated on May 5.
It may be recalled that in February, the State Election Commission had filed an affidavit in the High Court that the election to elect new body to PMC will be held on or before May 5.
The State Election Commission was forced to file an affidavit after three-time PMC councillor Mahadev Khanolkar approached the High Court challenging government’s decision to postpone the PMC election. The PMC term ended in February.
however the election was postponed after the government decided to increase PMC wards from 13 to 14.
According to information, a representation from Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was made to the State Election Commission requesting to reschedule the election since May 5 is the feast day.
