MARGAO: With authorities concerned turning a blind eye to illegalities, the Scheduled Tribe Association of Sao Jose d Areal have demanded the arrest of the illegal scrapyard owner and removal of all illegal scrapyards from the village.
Saying that Tuesday’s scrapyard fire is the third incident to occur in the village, the Association has appealed to the authorities not to wait for another incident to initiate action against the illegal scrapyards.
In a representation to the District Collector and the district police chief, besides the village panchayat, Association President Pedro Castanha reminded the authorities that there exist around illegal 40 scrapyards in the village. “It is sad to note that these scrapyards operate without permission from any authority such as panchayat, fire, IDC, health, pollution etc”, he said.
Saying this can happen only by way of corruption, the Association has requested the Collector and the police to file FIR and order a thorough investigation. “We demand arrest of the illegal scrapyard owner responsible for the disaster. We also demand recovery of the loss of cashew trees from the owner,” Pedro asserted.
