MARGAO: Baifol in Assolna village witnessed commotion on Friday when a neighbour allegedly obstructed locals from clearing a pathway for a funeral.
It is learnt that one Elicina Paes had expired in Mumbai and her family members, who reside at Baifol, brought her mortal remains to perform the final rites at Assolna. When the body of the deceased arrived from Mumbai at 9 am, the same could not be carried to her house since branches of trees were found hanging over the pathway, while stones caused obstruction.
Assolna sarpanch Framila Almeida and local panch Pedrina Cardozo along with locals rushed to the spot upon hearing the news and requested the Joao sisters to allow clearing of the pathway. The Sarpanch claimed that Dr Zoya Joao refused to heed to their request, prompting the daughter of the deceased to rush to the Cuncolim police to lodge her complaint. In the meantime, agitated locals engaged a labourer to cut down the branches with a cutter and the body was taken to the house after three long hours. The mortal remains were laid to rest at the Assolna cemetery this evening.
Meanwhile, Lida Joao, in a complaint to Cuncolim police has alleged that she was allegedly dragged, attacked and assaulted with slaps and fist blows by a mob of 50 ladies when she was taking snaps. She alleged that the mob snatched her camera and threw it out to destroy material evidence.
Sarpanch Almeida, however, strongly denied Lida’s allegations. Meanwhile, police confirmed that a complaint has been filed by Lida.
