Out of the 20 constituencies in North Goa only one, Calangute, gave a lead
— albeit a very slender one — of 115 votes to the Congress. Calangute is represented by Michael Lobo of the BJP. The Congress has 5 MLAs from North Goa.
Poriem and Valpoi and Sanquelim considered the stomping grounds of the Rane clan all batted for the BJP with Sanquelim giving a healthy lead of around 8,000 votes to Shripad Naik.
In Salcete, except for former chief minister Digambar Kamat’s and independent MLA Vijai Sardesai’s constituencies, the other six gave leads to the Congress. Incidentally all these MLAs (other 6) were backing the BJP and Vijai masterminded the Congress candidate’s election campaign. Salcete has 8 constituencies.
All three constituencies from Mormugao taluka gave healthy margins to the BJP. One of the constituencies – Dabolim – is represented by Congress MLA Mauvin Godinho. Mauvin had openly rebelled against the Congress party and there was a major war of words between him and Congress President John Fernandes.
The mining belt in both North and South Goa gave huge leads to the BJP. Sanvordem itself gave around 12,000 votes to the BJP south Goa candidate. He won by a margin of 32,300 votes. Other mining areas like Bicholim, Sanguem and Curchorem also saw BJP garnering major vote share.
In Dabolim, Churchill Alemao polled 0 votes even though he got almost 12,000 votes around 600 more than AAP rookie candidate social activist Swati Kerkar.
Pernem home town of former NCP-Congress alliance candidate and contender this time Jitendra Deshprabhu gave a lead of around 12,000 to the BJP this time. Deshprabhu had lost by 6,300 votes last time.
Canacona who analysts were saying was in favour of Congress gave a lead of around 6,000 to the BJP. Canacona and its MLA Ramesh Tawadkar were recently in the news after the collapse of a under construction building there.
Quepem, despite having a Congress MLA (Babu Kavlekar), gave a lead of 721 votes to the BJP.
In Cuncolim, despite a BJP MLA in power, Congress got a lead of 750.
Minorities need not have any fears about the BJP victory in the country. All their apprehensions will vanish once they realise the functioning of the Modi government
Mopa airport is a non-issue for the simple reason that Dabolim has been upgraded to meet the growing requirements. There is no question of closure of the Dabolim airport in future
The dual citizenship issue needs to be solved through joint discussions with ministries of Home and External Affairs. People of Goa have been enjoying benefits of Portuguese citizenship and I think the issue needs to be addressed legally
— NARENDRA SAWAIKAR
I fought so many people – Churchill Alemao, Mauvin Godinho, Mickky Pacheco, Caitu Silva, Benjamin D’Slva, Avertano Furtado and our own leaders – who went on the other side. But we fought our battle and lost. However, the battle against divisive forces will not stop here
Vijai Sardessai had worked in all the 20 segments in Soth Goa, giving him no time to concentrate in Fatorda. But the fact remains that the BJP has got a slender lead when they were expecting much more votes in Fatorda
I will prepare a list of party leaders who worked against me at hustings and also oppose tooth and nail any attempts made by party leaders to give entry to Churchill Alemao in the Congress fold
