Canacona gives Sawaikar a lead of 5906 votes

CANACONA: With a lead of 5,906 votes in the Canacona assembly segment, the BJP has consolidated its influence in Canacona taluka by increasing its winning margin as compared to the 2012 assembly results.
Jubilant BJP workers led by Sports Minister and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar staged a victory rally after scoring a lead of 5,906 votes in Canacona Assembly segment.
Realizing that the lead had almost matched his predictions of 6,000 votes, Tawadkar said this lead had bettered his own winning margin of approximately 2700, during the last assembly elections.
Congress workers led by its leader Isidore Fernandes could garner only about 8657 votes, as against BJP’s 14,563 votes. While independent candidate Govind Gaude got 419 votes, Aam Admi Party was fourth in the list with 390 votes, followed by CPI (349), Churchill Alemao (152), Shalom Sardinha (143). Incidentally, there were 230 votes polled for None of the Above (NOTA) candidates.
Overjoyed with the huge lead in the taluka, Tawadkar led jubilant BJP workers in a victory rally proceeding to Agonda, Palolem, Patnem, Ponsulem, Chaudi, Shristhal, Poinguinim, Loliem, Cotigao and Gaondongrim, as firecrackers and constant beats of the Dhol marked the rally.
Reacting to the higher BJP lead, Congress leader Isidoere Fernandes said: “The votes in Canacona were not for local MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, but it is because people wanted a change at the Centre. This was also due to the UPA government’s negative projection by the media, and particularly by the BJP.”
