VASCO: The Mormugao municipal council on Monday sealed two shops even as about 250 shops have been found operating without a valid or renewed trade licence.
Mormugao chairperson Girish Borker has warned of stern action against establishments operating without trade licences in the municipal limits. He said that two shops – a hardware store and stationery shop – were after they were found operating without trade licence. The stationery shop situated Tilak Maidan, had been operating in the port town for last three decades without a licence, he said.

Borker said that he had already issued an order to the municipal staff to keep a check on the trade licences of shops and other establishments and to check whether the licences are renewed. He said that during the last eight days of exercise, the municipal staff have found that nearly 250 shops are operating without licences. What is most surprising is that some of these shops had never even applied for trade licences while few had not renewed their trade licences.
Stating that the municipality was against the traders, Borker said that the shopkeepers must ensure that the municipal council gets it taxes on time so as to serve them in a better way.
