AMBELIM: Navelim Sporting Club got the better of St Anthony Sports Club, Colva 3-1 in the final of the inter-village football tournament, organized by Ambelim Sports Club, at Ambelim ground, recently.
Clinton Niasso for Navelim Sporting Club was in thick of action as he floated a ball to Avlon Gomes in the 10th minute but the latter missed to score.
Sandly Colaco broke the deadlock for Navelim SC in the 25th minute after an assist from Avlon Gomes.
Nevin Pereira doubled the lead for Navelim SC in the very next minute with a powerful long ranger.
Avlon Gomes increased the tally with the third goal just a minute before the first half whistle.
St Anthony SC started with renewed ideas in the second session but Pawasker shot wide on two occasions in the 50th and 52nd minutes.
However, they pulled one goal back in the dying minutes through Pawasker.
The winners were awarded Rs 30,000 and a trophy while the runners up had to be content with Rs 20,000 and a trophy.
The following prizes were awarded to Best goalkeeper of the final: Dalwin Costa of Navelim SC; Best defender of the final: Dhilon Fernandes of St Anthony SC, Colva; Best midfielder of the final: Jaison Pereira of Navelim SC; Best striker of the final: Clinton Niasso and Best player of the final: Avlon Gomes (both of Navelim SC).
Minister for Water Resources, Dayanand Mandrekar was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Minister for Fisheries, Avertano Furtado, MLA of Velim Constituency Benjamin Silva, Fr Cajetan Dourado and other dignitaries. John Silva welcomed and Christo proposed the vote of thanks.
