Sources told Herald that the site inspection committee of the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) was positive about the 280 acres Loliem site shortlisted for setting up a permanent IIT campus.
“The committee is positive about this land. We, however, have to wait for a communication from the MHRD which would be based on the report of the committee. We expect it will approve the land,” an official said.
The five-member committee comprising Additional Secretary (MHRD) R Subramanyam, Director of IIT Bombay Prof Devang Khakhar, Director of IIT Gandhinagar Prof Sudhir Jain, Secretary, Education (Goa) Virendra Kumar and Superintendent of Engineer, Central Public Works Department Pradip Garg along with Technical Education (Goa) Director Vivek Kamat and Assistant Director Deepak Gaitonde carried out an extensive assessment of the plot on Wednesday. Sarpanch, Bhushan Prabhugaonkar, besides comunidade members, were taken into confidence during the inspection.
If approved and during the period when the permanent location of the IIT Goa is finalized and infrastructure raised, the State will be allowed to operate the IIT from the GEC campus. Sources said that 90 seats – 30 each in three streams of electrical engineering, computer engineering and mechanical engineering – will be offered.
