A national human rights convention titled ‘The Truth Behind’ on September 3 and 4 at the International Centre in Dona Paula will delve into subjects like ‘mining and human rights violation’, ‘terrorism and human rights’ and ‘sexuality’.
The convention organised by Youth For Goa (YFG) is mostly targeted at college students to create awareness on violation of human rights in Goa and the rest of the country. It will cover a total of six topics giving an overview of human rights violations.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday Convenor YFG Melisa Simoes gave an overview of the convention. The first day will cover the inauguration by psychiatrist Meenakshi Martins and three topics – sexuality, Goa over the years and mining and human rights violation. Simoes informed Opposition Leader Manohar Parrikar and MD of Sesa Goa Prasun Mukherjee will be the speakers at the session on ‘mining and human rights violation’ giving both positive and negative feedback on the subject.
She said Supreme Court advocate Mahesh Jethmalani will speak on ‘terrorism and human rights’ on September 4. We have tried to make the convention interesting by interspersing the event with documentaries and video clippings for the students to get a better idea of human rights violation, she mentioned.
Besides, she said, there will be documentary and research paper competitions. “We are expecting around 200 Goan college youth to attend the convention and also law students from Maharashtra and Karnataka,” she said and added, “There is no registration fee for the event.” The other speakers who will speak at the convention include former legislator Matanhy Saldanha and lecturer Prajal Sakhardande who will give their views on ‘Goa over the years’.
Today’s press conference of YFG was also attended by its PRO Amal Samantha, treasurer Gaurang Panandikar and joint secretary Sanketh Ajgaonkar.
