Labour Dept to implement Hazardous Waste Movement Rules in State

PANJIM: The Goa Government has authorised the Office of the Commissioner, Labour and Employment, to implement the Hazardous and Other Waste (Management and Transboundary) Movement Rules, 2016 in the State.
In the order issued earlier this month followed by its notification, the department has been authorised to implement provisions of Rule 5(2) of the Rules.
The department will now have to ensure recognition and registration of workers involved in recycling, pre-processing and other utilisation activities, assist formation of groups of such workers to facilitate setting up such facilities, undertake industrial skill development activities for the workers involved in recycling, pre-processing and other utilisation, undertake annual monitoring and ensure safety and health of workers involved in recycling, pre-processing and other utilisation.
Earlier this year, the Centre had amended the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules, 2016 to include prohibition on import of solid plastic waste even in special economic zones (SEZ) and by export-oriented units (EOUs).
The Ministry of Environment had amended the rules to strengthen the implementation of environmentally sound management of hazardous waste in the country.
