SIRLIM: Cuncolim Union edged past Sao Jose De Areal 3-2 to cruise into the semi-final of the 23rd All Goa Our Lady of Merces 8-a-side inter-village football tournament, organised by Sirlim Sports Club, at Chinchinim Church ground, on Sunday.
Both teams showed urgency to score right from the word go. In the 14th minute, Platiny Andrade of Areal made no mistake to score from a through pass by Dzley Silva to take the lead.

Cuncolim Union found the equaliser through a classy free-kick by Denvil Fernandes in the 16th minute. Cuncolim took the lead in the 28th minute through Daylon Carvalho’s grounder which beat the rival keeper. At half time, Cuncolim led Sao Jose De Areal 2-1.
On change of ends, Sao Jose De Areal pressed hard for an equaliser and succeeded through Jolliston Cardozo in the 44th minute with a powerful right footer making it 2-2 for Areal.
Pressing hard, Clifton Fernandes scored through Brigesh Shalke’s pass in the 63rd minute to make it 3-2 for Cuncolim. St Jose De Areal pressed hard to level terms both teams played an attacking brand of football keeping the crowd on toes. Cuncolim Union will now meet Navelim Villagers Union in the semi-finals.
