PONDA: The Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) on Friday decided to impose taxes on sewerage, piped natural gas connections, Cable TV service and improve the financial condition of the civic body.

At a monthly meeting under Chairmanship of Chairperson Shantaram Colvekar discussions on imposing various taxes were held.
Colvekar said, “These taxes are imposed to improve financial condition of the PMC as per directions of the government. However, it would not affect much to the common man.”
He said, “Last time the PMC faced fund crunch and finally paid the salary to daily workers through fixed deposit fund.”
“In the PMC jurisdiction, various services are provided to households by various agencies such as Sewerage Department, Piped Natural Gas and cable operator. The PMC will directly charge various taxes to these service providers towards services to every household,” Colvekar said.
“The cable tax will be two per cent of the total monthly rent paid to the cable operator by every household and will be recovered from the cable operator. Besides, the imposition of taxes on piped natural gas (PNG) to every household. Similarly tax will be imposed on optic fiber cable line laid in the PMC jurisdiction,” he added.
Discussions on improvement of rules for providing repair, renovation licences were held as per the Directorate of Municipal Administration direction and the PMC recommended its various suggestions to the DMA.
The PMC suggested that only after inspecting the repair and renovation works, tax assessment should be done so that it would help to generate revenue.
