Pollution Control Board warns against fraudsters posing as officials

The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has issued a strong warning to industries, agencies, and the public about fraudsters impersonating Board officials to extort money in exchange for favours such as preventing closure action or issuing statutory clearances.

In an advisory, the Board revealed that several individuals have been approaching industrial units and establishments across Goa, falsely claiming to be GSPCB officers or staff. These impostors reportedly mislead companies by alleging that closure action is being initiated against them and then offer to “settle” the matter in exchange for a bribe.

Fraudulent activities exposed

According to the GSPCB, these fraudsters have also cheated businesses by promising to secure mandatory Consent to Establish or Consent to Operate, directing them to deposit fees into private bank accounts falsely represented as belonging to the Board.

In some cases, forged Consent Orders and documents printed on fake GSPCB letterheads have been circulated.

GSPCB clarifies official procedures

Clarifying its position, the Board stressed that its officials do not engage in any payment-related activities for the issuance of Consents and do not offer to intervene through unofficial means.

“Staff and officials of the Board do not indulge in such activities for obtaining Consent and/or for providing official documents or Consent Orders,” the statement read.

The GSPCB has filed criminal complaints with local police authorities against those involved and urged the public to report any suspicious activity or information that may assist in the investigation.

Help Desk for assistance

To help industries navigate official processes, the Board reminded stakeholders that it operates a dedicated Help Desk for all application-related assistance, ensuring transparency and preventing exploitation by fraudulent individuals.
