ISL stalemate sparks frustration among India’s leading footballers

The Indian Super League, India’s premier football competition, stands at an uncertain crossroads currently. The ISL is currently halted due to a combination of administrative deadlock and unresolved disputes between the league organisers and the All India Football Federation. Where the key issues include delays in finalising new commercial and broadcasting arrangements, failed negotiations regarding league tenders, and broader disagreements over governance, all of which have stalled the start of the season.

Veteran India striker Sunil Chhetri has called on the All India Football Federation to take urgent measures to restart the ISL season as uncertainty continues to grip the country’s top-tier football competition.

In a rare show of unity, several of India’s leading footballers, including Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Mandar Rao Dessai, and Brison Fernandes, who famously scored against the Saudi team during their visit to Goa, issued a joint statement urging authorities to ensure the league resumes without further delay. Many of them shared the message on social media, expressing frustration over the ongoing uncertainty and calling for clarity for players, clubs, and fans.

In their message, the footballers said, “We, professional footballers who play in the Indian Super League, are coming together to make a heartfelt plea, we stand united in our efforts to get the ISL season underway. To put it simply, we want to play, and we want to play now. This is an urgent call to all those entrusted with managing our sport in the country: do whatever it takes to bring football back. India needs its competitive football more than ever, not just for players or clubs, but for the millions who draw joy and inspiration from the beautiful game.”

Another emerging name, Goa-born Harsh Patre, who currently plays for FC Goa as a midfielder, also posted on social media: “With the ISL yet to start, every player is waiting for that moment to step on the pitch again. Being part of the squad for both home and away games against Al Nassr was truly special. We don’t get matches like these often, and most players in India would love to be part of such occasions. Facing teams and players of that level is something every footballer dreams of.”

Not only Gurpreet, Mandar, Brison, and Harsh Patre, but several other prominent names in Indian football have also raised their voices against the ongoing confusion and growing frustration surrounding the ISL’s uncertain future.
