Three people were killed and 65 others injured in Bangladesh after a 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Dhaka on Friday morning, sending tremors across Kolkata, West Bengal and parts of Northeast India. The India Meteorological Department confirmed that the quake was recorded at 10:08 am, 13 km south-southwest of Narsingdi, around 50 km from Dhaka, at a depth of 10 km.
A railing from a five-storey building in Dhaka’s Bongshal area collapsed during the tremor, crushing three pedestrians to death, The Dhaka Tribune reported. Locals said the victims were walking along the road when the railing suddenly gave way.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 10 injured persons were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while another 10 were admitted to Gazipur’s Tajuddin Medical College Hospital. At Narsingdi District Hospital, 45 people were treated, three of them in critical condition.
In Kolkata, residents rushed out of homes and offices after experiencing tremors for several seconds around 10:10 am. Videos shared online captured people gathering on streets in panic. Tremors were also felt in Cooch Behar, Dakshin and Uttar Dinajpur, as well as Guwahati, Agartala and Shillong.
The earthquake briefly halted the Test match between Bangladesh and Ireland in Dhaka, although play resumed shortly after with no reported damage.
